Plans to celebrate children’s author Roald Dahl in his centenary year with a three-day event in Tenby have been pencilled in by town councillors.
As 2016 marks 100 years since the storyteller’s birth in Cardiff, amateur dramatics group, the ‘Eastend Flyover Company’, who are based in Pembroke, met with members of Tenby Town Council ahead of their meeting last week, to tell them further of the festivities they are hoping to bring to the town in September.
The production would celebrate Dahl’s links to Tenby, the town having been a holiday spot for him during his childhood years, with the central theme of the piece being ‘The BFG’ and the creation of a nine-foot puppet to meander through the streets of Tenby, followed by an audience.
The puppet would stop at buildings of historical significance in the town and blow a dream in through the window, with these ‘dreams’ to be performed either through storytelling, projected animation or live performance.
The proposed production would be staged for three nights over September 8, 9 and 10, in the week leading up to Ironman, and Dahl’s birthday.
The intention is to start in the De Valence Pavilion, with the audience being invited to make their own dream jars which they can take home to keep as a reminder of the day itself, but also use as part of the performance as they follow the BFG through Tenby.
In addition, cast who are not involved in the performance at that particular time might be seen wandering the streets as Dahl characters.
“The actual route is just an idea at the moment, so we are open to discussion,” explained the production company’s chairman, Angharad Scourfield.
“We think it would be good for the town and hopefully as it’s a week before Ironman, there will still be plenty of tourists around,” she continued, stating that they would be looking to sell around 100 tickets for each night’s performance.
Scriptwriter Naomi Chiffi told councillors that they would be looking to get local schools involved in the production as well.
Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, who gave her support to the idea, said that she would take the proposal to the next meeting of the De Valence Trust.
“I think it’s an absolutely brilliant idea,” she told the production group and her fellow councillors.
