A Tenby man has come up with a fun and inspiring way to help people through any loneliness or boredom they might be feeling during the lockdown whilst also getting their exercise and activity fix and at the same time conquer new heights!
Nicky Lloyd has devised the ‘Climb Against Corona’ plan that you can enjoy in your own homes, with the idea to climb your stairs in as many blocks/reps as is comfortable, as many times a day in order to scale and conquer the dizzy heights of local, Welsh, UK and Worldwide peaks and mountains.
“Well I am in no doubt that all of you good people, currently adjusting to Government ‘social isolation’ and ‘stay at home’ instructions are contemplating the potentially adverse affects on your physical and mental wellbeing - I know I have been and, in doing so, I wanted to focus on an ‘at home activity’ that will positively impact on both,” he explained.
“In our house we have 40 steps from ground floor to top floor, consisting of 36 stairs and two paces/steps on each of the two lower landings, so if you have any steps/stairs in or leading to your property then ‘Climb Against Corona’ could definitely be for you.”
Here is the formula - take the height of landmark in metres multiplied by 3.3 to give you height in feet, multiplied by 12 to give you the height of landmark in inches, divided by the depth, in inches, of your stairs.
So by way of an example - the highest peak in Wales is Snowdon which stands at 1085 metres. Multiply by 3.3 = 3580 feet; multiply by 12 = 42966 inches; divided by 7 ins = 6138 stairs/steps.
“We started on Saturday by doing 20 stair climb reps, in other words, 800 steps so, by dividing 6138 stairs by 800 we know we will have scaled and reached the peak of Snowdon in 7.67 days which we will round up to 8 days!” continued Nicky.
“We are starting with the highest peaks in Pembrokeshire and continuing on up through the highest points in England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland and onwards to the world stage - and have worked out that we will be conquering Mount Everest on approximately May 30!
“You can, like me, climb your stairs in as many blocks/reps as is comfortable for you and as many times a day as is convenient. You can work out, in advance, a programme that will inform how long each successful landmark ascent will take you.”
Music mad Nicky has even come up with his own ‘Climb Against Corona’ themed playlist - featuring tracks such as Yazz’s The Only Way Is Up, Step On by the Happy Mondays, and Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush.
“We started our climb on Saturday and tonight we have reached the third highest peak in Pembrokeshire called Mynydd Carningli. The views from here are beautiful! We then reached and passed the second highest point in Pembrokeshire Carn Menyn and we will ‘Move on Up’ as Curtis Mayfield would say, and conquer Foel Cwmcerwyn the highest peak in Pembrokeshire,” he continued.
Nicky has encouraged others to like and share the Facebook page and join in the adventure by working out your progress and posting on the ‘Climb Against Corona’ page landmarks that you conquer.
“Remember folks it doesn’t matter if you have just one flight of stairs you can do it, and f you haven’t got any stairs/steps in, or leading to, your home I will work out a formula for calculating key distances walked with the ultimate aim being to walk significant distances from your home to major towns, cities and landmarks all within the comfort of your home/garden.
“Onwards and upwards - and let’s keep each other well and let’s conquer mountains!” he added.
