The most successful beach clean yet was recently held at Frainslake Beach, located on the Castlemartin MoD Range in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

Although not accessible to the public, this beach requires clearing annually to keep on top of the waste washed in - as well as a fridge, children’s toys and two gas canisters, tons of plastic, rope and netting were also removed.

In all, 38 people attended, including military staff from Castlemartin MoD, Landmarc staff, Keep Wales Tidy, National Park Authority voluntary wardens and staff, Friends of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and members of the public, making it the most successful beach clean to date.

National Park Authority Castlemartin ranger Lynne Houlston said: “We had a really successful day in every sense - tons of potentially harmful items to wildlife and the environment were cleared from the foreshore, which was followed by a tour around the coast of Range West and lunch at Camp Merrion.

“I would like to thank again everyone involved for their hard work and their help in making the day a great success.”

The rubbish cleared was taken to Camp Merrion’s waste sorting station, where it will be picked through by hand to remove anything that can be recycled.

An MoD spokesperson added: “I’d like to thank all the staff and volunteers who took part in the Frainslake Beach Clean. We removed a large amount of washed-up rubbish and the beach now looks great. We were very happy to provide a tour and lunch as a thank you to everyone who helped out.”

Frainslake Beach is cleared on an annual basis in August and is advertised for anyone who wants to join in. All Castlemartin Range West tours are advertised in Coast to Coast, the National Park Authority’s visitor magazine, which can be viewed on www.pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk/coasttocoast or downloaded as an app for Apple and Android devices.
