Preparations are underway to hold a Basketball event in Whitland at the end of March. On Sunday, March 25, an Under 15 Basketball Tournament is being held for the very first time at the Dyffryn Taf Sports Hall. To date, five teams have entered into the competition, two from the Whitland Basketball Club, Llandysul Basketball Club and two teams from the Gwent Basketball Academy in Cwmbran. It is hoped that eight teams will be involved on the day and entries are sought from any other teams, particularly from Carmarthenshire or Pembrokeshire. The event organisers would like to encourage any local teams to go along to this event. As well as the junior tournament, it is planned for various senior events to take place during the day. This will include shooting and slam dunk competitions and a senior exhibition match. Basketball is a major worldwide sport, not just in the United States and it is hoped that through events like this that it's profile can be enhanced throughout West Wales. Spectators are encouraged and the event is free to everyone. The event is being organised and sponsored by Carmarthenshire based Marketing Design, Internet and I.T. Solutions company Hand in Hand Solutions Ltd., a business that was born out of the directors connection through basketball. Additional sponsorship is sort, in order to make this an event to remember. Whitland Basketball Club only started in September 2006, having previously been run in Preseli School, Crymych. It now boasts about 40 members. It has close ties to the Carmarthen Men's Team and some members belong to both clubs. It has also forged close links with the Gwent Basketball Academy, which create an avenue for would be professionals to develop. Vic Fleming the head coach of the Gwent Academy will be in attendance on the day, making this an ideal opportunity for West Wales basketball players to showcase their talent. It is hoped that this is the first of many Basketball events that will be held in Whitland. If it is successful it is hoped in the near future to hold other events including a seniors tournament and a summer school. Whitland Basketball Club would like to thank Dyffryn Taf School for all its support, not only with this event but in supporting its venture throughout the season.
