A Barnardo's service in Pembrokeshire which has helped brighten the lives of hundreds of disabled children over the last 20 years is celebrating its birthday this week. Guests past and present have been invited to help Pembrokeshire Family Links celebrate its landmark birthday at Crundale Hall, on August 22. Children, parents, link carers and staff will be treated to a day of fun and frolics, including balloon-making, face-painting, circus acts and musical workshops with Bongo Clive. For 20 years, the service has linked hundreds of disabled children to other families in the community. The West Wales project links disabled children to other families with whom they can stay overnight or for a weekend, giving them the opportunity to develop new social contacts while at the same time allowing the parents to recharge their batteries and spend time with other members of the family. The project also works with disabled children and their families to make sure they have opportunities to get involved in all sorts of inclusive leisure activities through access to sessional support workers, and home support is also offered. Sarah Wardell, acting children's service manager, said: "This is our chance to say thank you to everyone who has made the service such a resounding success over the years." "This is a very special birthday party for our service, but it also comes at a time when Barnardo's is approaching the 100th anniversary of its founder Dr. Thomas Barnardo. "Today Barnardo's Pembrokeshire Family Links service is keeping alive the vision of Dr. Barnardo, who believed that every child should have a chance to reach their full potential and have the best possible future. Our service is doing just that and I hope with the support of the public we will be able to continue for years to come." The service is always on the lookout for more carers and sessional support workers. For more information, contact Pembrokeshire Family Links on 01646 687064.
