The next concert at Burnett’s Hill Chapel, Martletwy, on Wednesday (August 7) will feature the remarkable talents of Faith and Branko Ristic and their quartet.
Faith is from Oxfordshire and is a singer and virtuoso accordion player who performed with Gifford’s Circus before meeting Serbian fiddle player Branko, widely regarded as one of the finest Balkan Gypsy fiddlers of his generation.
The story of how they fell in love without speaking a word of each other’s language has been told in a number of national newspaper articles.
As well as getting married, they formed a musical partnership to perform the music of Branko’s Balkan homeland.
Expanding to a quartet with the addition of a guitarist and double bass player, and adding some of their own material inspired by the Roma musical tradition, they have since become a major force on the World Music stage, performing at Glastonbury and the Royal Festival Hall and touring Australia on a couple of occasions.
Their debut album ‘Gypsy Lover’ shot to the top of the World Music charts and they have recently been working with acclaimed Serbian film-maker Emir Kustirica (Black Cat, White Cat; ’Time of the Gypsies).
“This is an amazing opportunity to hear one of the most exciting Balkan Gypsy ensembles in the world performing in the intimate setting of a beautiful Pembrokeshire country chapel,” said concert organiser Keith Johnson.
“In fact, we’ve had ticket bookings from people who’ve seen them before and are travelling down from the English borders in order to catch them again.”
Tickets are £12 each from Main Street Music in Pembroke or from 01646 651725.
