Mean thieves have stolen a Christmas tree from a village in south Pembrokeshire. A reward has been offered for information which leads to the return or prosecution of those responsible for stealing Kilgetty's festive spruce. "The 18-foot tree was dropped off at the entrance to Ash Park near to Station Garage by Huw Scale, of Four Seasons, between 3 and 4 pm on Monday afternoon," explained Mike Breen, a member of the Begelly Kilgetty Community Association. "We planned to erect the tree and put the lights on it at 12 noon on Tuesday, but when we turned up to do the work, the tree was gone. "All that was left was tyre marks near to the spot where the tree had been left, which seems to suggest it was taken by a vehicle," continued Mr. Breen. Anyone with any information is asked to contact either Mr. Breen on 813451 or Terry Ball on 814715. Elsewhere in the village, there has been more misery in the run-up to Christmas. Pembrokeshire County Council has come under fire from traders who have been angered by road works in Carmarthen Road. The local authority has been resurfacing the road and is due to complete the work by today (Friday). "The state of the road is disgusting," butcher, Dai Thomas, told the Observer. "Lots of people have been telephoning the county council complaining about it. "The council didn't even have the courtesy to inform us that the work was going to take place and right before Christmas is awful. People are just not coming to Kilgetty. "There are raised manhole covers right through the village and because the road is uneven, ponds of water have been forming and vehicles have been splashing the mothers and children when they walk to school." Mrs. Jane Gilbert, of Kilgetty Pharmacy, said the state of the road was 'diabolical'. "The children are getting filthy dirty going to school," she said. "People are coming to Kilgetty, but they are not coming back. Surely the work could have been done at another time of year." A spokeswoman for Pembrokeshire County Council said that the resurfacing should be completed by today (Friday). Said Ceri Jones, the authority's assistant press and PR officer: "The resurfacing contract is being carried out by Tarmac Construction, who planed off the surface on December 1. "The reason for the length of time the project is taking is because over 100 covers on the old road need to be adjusted. "These include 60 manhole covers and 40 gulley gratings, which have to be replaced, as they do not meet current standards."
