A Tenby town councillor claimed this week that the county council's decision to reduce the hours of street lighting in certain areas had 'left him baffled'.

Members of the town council were recently informed by Pembrokeshire County Council's head of highways and construction that the authority would not be making any changes at present to their partial extinguishment of street lighting between 12 and 5 am policy, after councillors had questioned elements of the scheme which has been introduced to reduce the carbon footprint across the county.

Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, Clr. Paul Rapi was critical of the approach.

"It's baffling how the county council are working out what areas should have street lights on and off as part of this scheme," he said.

For example, a village like Sageston seems to have full lighting, while a busy town like Tenby with more nightlife has lighting in certain areas extinguished," continued Clr. Rapi.

Clr. Mike Evans explained that the initiative was part of a rolling programme by the authority and that the policy hadn't reached certain areas of the county yet.

Clr. Lawrence Blackhall proposed that it would be worth writing to the local police force to garner their views on the policy, as he wondered if it would hinder their ability to police the area in any way, while Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown suggested that the lighting blackout might have made it easier for the culprits who vandalised the Jubilee play park recently to get away with the incident.
