So far this year, the West Wales Badger Group have had six orphaned badger cubs brought into their sanctuary from different areas of Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion.
All six babies were very ill when they arrived, but all survived except one, which had been without its mother and food and water for too long, although every effort day and night was made to try to save him. Unfortunately, he died from liver damage.
Any baby badger found on its own usually means that something has happened to its mother. At this time of year there are still orphaned cubs roaming around unable to care for themselves and they will die of starvation unless they are taken or reported to the sanctuary.
The West Wales Badger Group would like to thank members of the general public who have been vigilant and taken the young badgers to the sanctuary. Also the many people who have reported dead and injured badgers to them; all dead badgers are recorded. They are asking people to keep up the good work.
Because of the amount of work involved with caring for the adult badgers and orphaned cubs, the costs of running the sanctuary are enormous. The Badger Group are holding their Summer Fayre on August 11 at the Regency Hall, Saundersfoot, commencing at 11 am, to try to raise some funds.
Members of the general public can help by giving something for the stalls, such as bric-a-brac, cakes, plants, books or bottles and tins of anything for the bottle stall. These items would be much appreciated and if necessary can be collected.
