Following mild euphoria resulting from the highly successful March Fine Art and Antiques Sale where a 17th century atlas realised £60,000 plus premium, the April and May Pensarn General Auctions have returned to some reality. However, it has to be said that the number of new faces in the crowd at both auctions was very encouraging. Addresses were registered from all over South Wales and a number from across the Border. Last week saw a large array of ornaments and general ceramics, including a mixed group of Capo Di-Monte and German figures at £340, a pair of 19th century vase lustres at £120, modern paper weights and scent bottles at £50, Royal Doulton dinner service at £200, dresser jugs (8) at £60 and five copper lustrejugs at £80. Stamps, coins, small silver and cabinet lots were, as always, vigorously contested and post cards just as popular as ever. The story with furniture, especially more modern pieces, continues to be one of great value for those prepared to make the effort and visit. One lucky young couple bought a pine kitchen table and eight chairs, top quality with a retail value of surely over £1,000, for only £270. Older pine and Victorian pieces are more desirable, but still much cheaper than a few years ago. Big opportunities exist in sales for private furniture buyers interested in lots from the mid 20th century to present day, some of which really do 'go for a song'. It's a fun day out and the auctioneers are friendly and pleased to see you! Give it a try.
