Leading entrepreneurs in the Pembrokeshire food and drink industry were recognised for their achievements on Wednesday at the County Show at Withybush, Haverfordwest. The annual Pembrokeshire Produce Mark Awards were announced at the Food Hall by the chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Clr. Bill Roberts. The Pembrokeshire Produce Mark scheme has more than 300 members, who are verified to ensure that the product they sell or use is made in Pembrokeshire. The scheme include food and drink producers, artists and craftspeople, hospitality establishments which use Pembrokeshire food and drink in their menus; and retail outlets which sell locally-made items. Members can display an unique logo, and this branding greatly assists people seeking local products. Kate Morgan, food officer at Pembrokeshire County Council, said: "There has been a growing demand, especially over the last few years, for locally- sourced food, as customers are becoming more interested in the provenance of what they eat. "These awards go to those local businesses who are excelling in their response to that demand, and are clearly dedicated to putting Pembrokeshire produce on our plates." The winners this year are: Best New Pembrokeshire Product - (joint winner) - Pembrokeshire Honey Fudge. Pembrokeshire Honey Fudge is homemade in Wiston by Yvonne Morgan who uses borage flower honey from the nearby West Valley Honey Farm, owned by her parents Ian and Shirley Richards. The borage flower is grown in many parts of Pembrokeshire. A member of local country markets, Yvonne decided to start producing honey fudge three years ago in the hope of achieving something a bit different. After weeks of trial and error, she devised the perfect recipe and says 'it's now down to a fine art'. "The borage flower produces a lighter honey, which means the fudge is light in colour and unique in taste," said Yvonne, who also often uses local Bethesda butter in the recipe. Yvonne sells the fudge at Haverfordwest Farmers Market, Country Market stalls and a few selected outlets. She also makes the fudge to order on request. Best New Pembrokeshire Product - (joint winner) - DASH Shellfish. Danny Curtis and his father Keri, of Little Haven, launched DASH Shellfish last year, supplying fresh, high quality crab and lobster to hospitality establishments in the county. Caught by local fishermen in St. Brides Bay, including off the islands of Skomer and Grassholm, the shellfish are handpicked and steamed, rather than boiled, to retain maximum flavour. The duo specialise in dressed crab and crabmeat, and sell mainly to restaurants and pubs along the Pembrokeshire coast. Best Use of Pembrokeshire Produce in a Hospitality Establishment - The Clock House, Marloes. Phil and Sue Twidale's love of good cooking and fresh local produce is evident from their popular café/ bar at 'The Clock House' bed and breakfast. Local seafood is a favourite, including lobster, brown crabs, and mackerel. Lunches, teas and evening meals are cooked in an uncomplicated style, allowing the flavours of the ingredients to come through. "We've gone out of our way to find local suppliers which has been very popular with our customers," said Sue. "It's definitely something which we will be moving forward with." Originally from Herefordshire, Phil and Sue were regularly holidaymakers to Pembrokeshire until two years ago, when they saw The Clock House and, on impulse, decided to buy it. "It was a shock to us all!" said Sue. "But we absolutely love it; it's a complete change, and although it's very hard work, it doesn't feel like work." Best Use of Pembrokeshire Produce in a Retail Outlet - A Taste of the County. Taste of the County is a new farm shop run by Hugh Scale, of Four Seasons, - a well established high quality fruit and vegetable business - and Martin Duffy who also runs Tenby Smokery. The shop, which is situated at Crane Cross, between Begelly and Tenby, sells a full range of local and organic produce sourced from Pembrokeshire wherever possible. Produce includes fresh fruit and vegetables, farmhouse cheeses, home-baked goods, dairy produce, eggs, fresh meat and fish plus a range of smoked and deli products. Hugh said they were responding to a growing interest in local food. "People are definitely becoming more aware of food miles and where their food comes from," he said. The awards were presented by Clr. Bill Roberts, chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, who congratulated the winners on providing a high quality product. He said: "Pembrokeshire is home to some of the very best food and drink in the country, and these are great examples of local businesses making and using local produce to superb effect."
