A Saundersfoot woman who has helped raise over £70,000 for the Arthritis Research Campaign (arc) has been honoured with the highest award that the charity can bestow on fundraisers within the community.

Mrs. Marjorie Spicer-Freeman, of Cwm Gwennol, was presented with the charity's gold award at the Imperial Hotel, Tenby on Friday by Glenys Scholfield, Community Fundraising Assistant at arc's head office in Chesterfield.

Mrs. Spicer-Freeman first became involved in arc, which funds research into the different causes, treatments and possible cures of arthritis, 25 years ago when her husband Denis, helped found a branch of the charity in Redditch and kept up the work when the couple moved to Sambourne.

When Mr. and Mrs. Spicer-Freeman moved to Saundersfoot nearly 14 years ago, she joined the Tenby branch and, when that branch unfortunately folded, Mrs. Spicer-Freeman decided to carry on co-ordinating the fundraising on her own, helping to contribute to the £2.2 million given to local doctors and hospitals annually by arc to fund research.

While Mrs. Spicer-Freeman intends to carry on her good work, the charity would be interested in hearing from local people who would be interested in fundraising in Tenby and Saundersfoot, with a view to forming a new branch in the area.
