LOCAL author Dr. Robert Davies presented a copy of his latest book to the hon. curator of Tenby Museum, John Beynon, last week. 'Flow Gently Sweet River' charts the history of Lawrenny from the mid 18th century to present-day and includes some delightful anecdotes provided by locals as well as a fascinating insight into the activities of the village over the last 200 years and its lively mix of characters. It charts the rise and fall of the quarrying, shipbuilding and coal exporting activities at its quayside in the 19th century, the racing stables before 1914, and the modern life of the village. There are photos of schoolchildren in their pinnies and caps in the 1920s and one of the moment of explosion when Lawrenny Castle was demolished in 1952. The book was commissioned by the Lawrenny Village Hall committee and researched and written by Dr. Davies in his spare time and at his own cost for the benefit of the community. It is available for that special Christmas present in book shops throughout the county and the Lawrenny Post Office.
