ARTS CLUB
Last Friday evening the Arts Club was pleased to welcome the award winning photographer, Ray Hine, as our speaker. Ray's outstanding work is well-known throughout the area and his subject on this occasion was "creating better photographs.
He began by showing us different kinds of cameras and explaining what their limitations were and the kind of films that should be used with each.
Then, with the aid of slides, Ray pointed out the most important principles to be remembered when taking photographs. Perspective, giving depth of view, the focal point of a subject, and the position of the horizon in the picture should all be carefully considered.
Different effects can be achieved by the closeness of a subject. Evening and morning light give texture.
Ray urged us to experiment with ideas. Seascapes, trees and their foliage, berries, flowers, cobwebs, ice and snow, and abstract patterns all give opportunities for producing interesting and unusual pictures. Reflections and silhouettes also provide extraordinary results. Would be photographers were advised to keep their eyes open for something different to catch on film, always remembering that the camera sees more than your do. A figure in the background can spoil what would otherwise be an attractive photograph.
To conclude his talk, Ray Hine showed slides taken recently on a visit to Prague where the temperature was 8 degrees below zero. The spectacular architecture of the buildings nestling against each other with the frozen river below and a grey misty atmosphere surrounding the whole scene caught admirably the city in winter.
On behalf of the Arts Club Noel Radford thanked Ray for giving us such an absorbing and interesting evening with an abundance of information and making it all seem so simple. He added that Ray had inspired us all to take better photographs.
This Friday at 8 pm, Margaret Acors will take us on an adventurous journey to Rajastan. Everyone is welcome.
