A youngster with strong local connections recently achieved a major feat in the sporting field of archery. Twelve-year-old Michael Morgan, whose mother Kirstie originally hails from Tenby, where his grandfather Cam McBurnie still lives, was part of the Llantwit Major archery team that represented Wales at the IFAA UK Field Archery Championships held in Galashiels, Scotland. The course was set on the side of a mountain with shots so steep that the scoring average of almost every competitor was substantially down. The biggest success though of the Welsh team was Michael who became Wales' only full champion in the cub (under 13s) barebow recurve division. His success was compounded by the fact that he set a new Welsh record for the field round in the process. "Michael has done exceptionally well in winning the UK title in only his second full international tournament," said his coach, Mathew Symmonds. "The course was exceptionally difficult and it managed to catch out several seasoned internationals, but Michael has trained intensively in recent months and his commitment shone through during the tournament," he added. Michael also received further good news with the announcment that he has been selected to be part of the archery team that will compete in Australia next year.
