A month after being snubbed by the fire service who didn’t invite the Mayor to the dedication service for Narberth’s new fire engine, it appears the First Citizen has been given another ‘slap in the face.’
Speaking at Tuesday night’s monthly meeting of the town council, current Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Rogers, said she had not been invited officially to the two-day food extravaganza, but had paid herself to go along wearing the chain of office.
Clr. Mrs. Sue Rees, a past Mayor herself, described the incident as an ‘insult to the town’ and a ‘slap in the face,’ adding: “When I was first Mayor and Clr. Feetham stood as my deputy, I remember him telling me you wear the chain at every single event to show support.”
She continued: “All the Mayors of Pembrokeshire are referred to as the chain gang. You are not Elizabeth Rogers as a person or the Mayor of Narberth, it’s the chain that’s the important part. You are there to support the chain, in fact you are a coathanger. It’s the chain that belongs to Narberth.”
Adding: “None of these organisations are backwards in coming forwards and asking for help.”
It was agreed the clerk write a letter to the food festival committee about the matter.
FOOTNOTE: Clr. Mrs. Rogers said she had met with the chief fire officer who she said ‘didn’t really apologise’ for not inviting her to the new fire engine dedication service, but explained that there were a lot more people there than he had planned and that it was an ‘unfortunate event,’ but he would ‘make sure’ council was liaised with in the future to solve the issue.
