Another honour was bestowed on Narberth's prolific boxing referee, John Phillips, when he refereed and judged at the prestigious WBC event held in Cardiff CIA last Friday.

The World Boxing Council set-up as part of their 35th anniversary a Great Britain versus rest of the world boxing tournament where teams from China, USA, Sweden and Ireland etc., took part.

This was John's second Great Britain event for he also refereed the Great Britain versus Ireland match in 1992.

There was a huge gathering of great champions that came to this event. Sitting at ringside were great champions Roberto Duran, John H. Straegy, Colin Jones, Alan Minter, Robbie Reagan and amongst them all was the world's heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.

This huge crowd witnessed a titanic struggle between Britain and the rest of the world and it ended a draw at 6-6.

After the boxing, a huge banquet was held where all the great WBC champions were given a lavish meal, along with all the referees and judges.

John, who is one of the world's prolific referees, with now well over 10,000 bouts and has almost 40 years experience as an international referee, as well as Commonwealth, European, World Championships and even a Olympic qualifying event, to his name.

He is now OIC of the Western Division and his area covers Neath in the West to Aberystwyth, quite the largest area in Wales covering almost 30 clubs.

With club and dinner tournaments starting in under eight weeks, he can be seen at all tournaments in his division and if anyone is interested in joining the Welsh ABA, go to ringside at these shows where John will be glad to give all the details you need to know.
