Huge support lined the streets of Narberth and its surrounding areas on Sunday as local businessman Andrew Rees successfully completed his ‘Virtual London Marathon’ challenge for charity in a magnificent 3 hours and 33 minutes!
Running 26 miles around Ludchurch, Tavernspite, Templeton Princes Gate and Narberth, Andrew undertook the marathon to raise funds towards the Paul Sartori Foundation in memory of his wife Janice.
There was huge support along the route from his family, good friends, and the Narberth Dynamos with some joining in the legs with Andrew either on foot or by bike, to keep his spirits up.
Andrew’s sons James and Tomas ran early legs, and his grandsons Jacob and Charlie ran the last leg with him. Anthony (Janice’s brother) was the official pacemaker, indeed pushing the pace!
On average Andrew did 8 minute miles - even getting some 6 minute miles in there but then admitted that was a little fast!
The most challenging part he said was Tanners Lane from Templeton to Ludchurch Cross, around the half way mark.
“I am completely overwhelmed at the support for me both en route and around the town and I would like to thank people for being there to cheer me on, on what was an emotional day - in memory of my wife Janice,” remarked Andrew.
“She would have been there cheering me on from the front.”
The Narberth Divas who cycled around with Andrew said they had never seen so many rainbows on the day, and were convinced that was Janice’s way of showing support.
Andrew wishes to thank all those that have given so generously and ensured that his fundraising has reached the £10,000 mark, with money still pouring in.
Members of Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club also raised £200 in bucket collections along the way on Sunday; whilst Sandra Dade of the Paul Sartori Foundation, said that the charity is delighted that Andrew has raised so much.
Narberth’s county councillor Vic Dennis remarked: “Congratulations to Andrew for running a virtual London Marathon to raise a huge amount of money for Paul Sartori Foundation in memory of his wife Janice.
“He received great support from the roadside and from his very own strong team, and all his personal efforts achieved an amazing time!”
