Embroiderers and artists alike will be thrilled and inspired by the latest exhibition at Colby Gallery. Starting on Monday, September 13, 'Sylvie's Miniatures and Ruth's Birds' offers the best of little and large in stitched pictures. Sylvie McCracken, who is a regular exhibitor at Colby, builds up her tiny compositions on a felt collage background using for her 'palette' a variety of threads, beads and ribbons. Describing this process as 'drawing with threads', her subjects include plants, animals, shore life and coastal scenes, together with gardening, garden tools, and especially for Colby - the Woodland Gardens. In total contrast, Ruth Burbery, exhibiting for the first time at Colby, produces large and flamboyant pictures of native and exotic birds, hand-stitched on a background of fabric delicately painted in water colour. Her kingfisher reproduced here may give some idea of the detail in the design, but gives nothing of its size and spectacularly vivid colours. This truly is an exhibition which needs to be seen to be believed! To complement these two very different exhibitors, there will also be on display a stunning collection of quilted items from nimble-fingered Pauline Lynch. So, bird fanciers, twitchers or stitchers - be warned, this exhibition will prove irresistible! The exhibition runs from September 16 to 26, daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
