Sir, To misquote Mark Twain, the report of my disappearance was an exaggeration. I refer, of course, to the letter from Mr. Dave John which was published in your newspaper last week which stated that the Footlights orchestra were 'unavailable' and implied that I had mysteriously vanished! As many of your readers will know, I have been the musical director of Saundersfoot Footlights for the last 12 years. During this time, I have made many close friends and had the pleasure of working with many talented actors, singers and musicians. Due to an unannounced change in set design around three weeks before the show, the orchestra found themselves relegated to a position in the hall where we were unable to communicate effectively with the cast and this would have spoilt the enjoyment for all involved, particularly that of the most important people in any theatre, the audience. This issue was raised on more than one occasion but, unfortunately, it seemed nothing would be done. There followed many long 'phone calls and much soul searching amongst the musicians and it was felt that we could no longer continue with a performance which would make us appear incompetent, and which would mar the experience for the paying public. This was a very difficult decision for all involved as many of the orchestra members return to the Regency Hall year in, year out and enjoy performing as much as any of the cast members. May I also use this opportunity to say to Helen Wright, Eileen Thomas and the cast that you were a pleasure to work with during rehearsals, and I have heard excellent reports about your performances in the show. I will greatly miss sharing the theatre experience with you all.
