PEMS (Pembrokeshire Eclectic Music Society) has organised another wonderful evening of musical entertainment at Manorbier Youth Hostel Skrinkle Haven, on Thursday, October 12.
Appearing will be the Leon Hunt n-Tet (pronounced entet), a three-piece band that has an original repertoire ranging from traditional and neo traditional bluegrass through to jazz, blues and funk.
Formed initially to fill a last-minute gap in the programme that had appeared at a festival (where the members were in attendance with other bands), they had so much fun, on and off of the stage, that they quickly became a going concern.
In March 2012, the original architect of the bluegrass banjo style, Earl Scruggs died. This led to the band getting together to record their debut CD, Farewell Blues (Remembering Earl Scruggs). This album was officially released at the 2013 Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow.
Leon Hunt, meanwhile, continues to confound the stereotypes that try to confine the banjo to bluegrass music, by making his living playing alongside some of the world’s top musicians from a multitude of musical styles and disciplines. That said, he’s not one to shy away from the clichés either - watch the TV for a long enough and there’s every chance you’ll hear some of his 100mph banjo picking.
The other members of the band are Jason Titley and Gina Griffin.
Jason is unquestionably one of the most driving and rhythmically engaging ‘flat pick’ guitarists you’ll hear anywhere. His background in drums and percussion shines through in his guitar style.
Gina Griffin is a truly unique musician. Her ability to sing in unison and even in harmony with her own fiddle improvisations is one of the most extraordinary and haunting sounds you’ll ever hear.
The aims of the Pembrokeshire Eclectic Music Society (a not for profit community organisation) are to: inform people about different kinds of music and dance, focusing on traditional music and dance and neo-traditional music and dance; expand people’s experience in different forms of traditional-based music and dance; and organise events in Pembrokeshire and West Wales to help fulfil the above aims.
They have surely succeeded in doing that again with this concert, which commences at 8 pm (doors open 7 pm). Tickets are £10 and are available by calling 01646 661363.
