One of TS Tenby Sea Cadets, Ordinary Cadet Max Randles, has spent a busy summer session taking part in many activities across the country.
In July, he spent a week with the offshore fleet, joining the sailing boat TS Liveryman in North Wales due to the weather conditions.
It was planned he should join at Milford Haven, but due to gale force winds, he was diverted to Caernarfon and spent the first few days around that area; as the weather improved, they set sail for Padstow.
This was a very long 48-hour run as the weather again closed in and sails had to be reefed to allow a safe passage. On completion of the voyage, he was awarded his deckhand qualification.
No sooner had he got home than he was packing again to attend a week's shooting camp at Sennybridge. He completed the course and was awarded his Full-Bore Advanced Marksman qualification.
Last weekend, he competed in the district shooting competition at the TA Centre, Haverfordwest.
He gained a good score, but not enough to go to the next stage of the competition. The following day he joined other Tenby cadets at the district swimming competition and won all four of his races; he will now join other district cadets at the area event to be held in October.
Max has had a busy summer, as have other cadets, in the regattas, with Ordinary Cadet Lori Amos, Able Cadets Sophie Beynon and Abie Markham representing the district in canoeing at the Bristol event during the summer. Cadet Charlie Tattershall went off to Cornwall for a week of boating with South West Boats, designed for the younger cadets.
Cadets helped out at the Castlemartin open day in aid of Warren Church and SSAFFA.
Two cadets, Christian Morris and Rowan Griffiths, travelled to Fishguard unit and undertook their BCU 1st Star canoe training and gained the qualification.
Cadets also attended a First Aid training day at the unit, with five of them gaining their 3rd class first aider qualification. This is the same level as a 'Named Person' in industry.
With the summer boating season, not a good one due to weather conditions, coming to an end, the winter programme is being finalised so that cadets can advance their qualifications and skills.
The unit opens every Tuesday and Thursday, from 7 to 9 pm, and should you like to join or need details of the unit, phone 01834 849641 for further information. Age groups are 10 - 12 juniors and 12 - 18 seniors.
Staff, committee members and helpers are always welcomed, as like so many other youth organisations, the unit only exists due to people volunteering their time.
