Angela Burns, Conservative AM for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, will join WRVS volunteers to deliver much-needed meals to older people in Pembrokeshire when she visits the WRVS meals on wheels service today (Friday).

M.s Burns will visit Monkton Priory Community School at 11.15 am, where she will see the meals being prepared for the meals on wheels service, and meet the volunteer drivers who take the meals to older people in the area. She will then accompany the volunteers to deliver some meals.

The service provides the older people of Pembrokeshire with much more than a hot meal. WRVS volunteers perform 'safe and well' checks when they deliver their meals to make sure the older people they deliver to have everything they need to stay happy, healthy and independent in their own homes.

Angela Burns, AM for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, said: "I think WRVS meals on wheels is an invaluable service and for many older people it is not just the food that is important but the contact with another human being who they get to know and like. It keeps people who are sometimes very isolated in touch with the rest of us."

Trish Hughes, WRVS service delivery manager for West Wales, said: "We're really pleased Ms. Burns has the opportunity to go out with our meals on wheels volunteers to see firsthand how such a vital service operates.

"She'll see for herself the commitment of our volunteers and gain an understanding why they choose to volunteer for the meals on wheels service, and see why it's so important for the older people who use it."
