Sir,
Re. the Avenue Centre, Tenby.
I worked as a teacher in the school, before the children eventually moved to Portfield, Haverfordwest, but I also had contact with the adult students. My mother worked with the adults, too, and we found the work rewarding, as well as enjoying the pleasure that the students had in the friendships they made and going out and about socially. Families were very appreciative of Day Care provided, giving them respite, especially as some of them would experience disturbed nights attending to the needs of their adult son or daughter.
I would like to ask a few questions of the councillors involved before they make any decision without really thinking it through.
1. Why has the Avenue Centre been allowed to deteriorate so badly over the years, without repairs being done as and when needed?
2. How many of the councillors have an adult with special needs within their ‘close’ family?
3. How many councillors have paid a visit to the various centres in the county, other than special events, when they have had their photo in the local paper?
I know there has been talk about relocating the library, I don’t know if this is still on the agenda. If it is and the Avenue Centre is forced to close, what a prime redevelopment site in the centre of Tenby! Am I being cynical to think that there might be an ulterior motive behind all this?
