During recent ground works at the former RAF airfield at Carew Cheriton, members of the Control Tower Group uncovered a taxi-track marker light which was found to be in excellent condition.

It was during the moving of an earth bank by a mechanical digger that the cast iron dome shape of the light was spotted.

Over the years, these lights have disappeared from the airfield, either covered over with the land reverting to agricultural use or simply removed and sold as scrap.

The light, known as part of the Drem mark 2 system, was manufactured to a very high standard and the quality of the materials used can be seen in this example recently uncovered.

A number of previously recovered units have been totally restored to working order and are now on display in the Control Tower Museum. The restoration of these lights has been undertaken by group members John Shaw and Steve Harries.

During the restoration programme, the lights were found to have very little amounts of corrosion, with the brass nuts and screws unlocking as if they were installed only yesterday. Remarkably, on some of the units, the coloured bulbs were still working.

Two colours were used - blue and amber, denoting the left and righthand sides of the taxi-track.
