This evening, there are at least two choices of event to attend. The Friends of Tenby Museum and Art Gallery are holding a fundraising Art Auction at the museum, with the auction starting promptly at 7 pm. Alternatively, Tenby and District Arts Club is having a Christmas celebration with a ‘bring and share’ supper starting at 6 pm in St. Johns Church Hall, Warren Street, Tenby.
Snowflakes
Whether we actually have snow or not, it seems appropriate to make some snowflakes at the moment. There are several ways to do this. One of the easiest is with white paint and dark coloured paper. If you paint six handprints round in a circle with your fingers pointing out, it makes an excellent snowflake, which could be glittered (with planet-friendly glitter, of course!) while the paint is still wet. You can also use glue to paint snowflakes, and shake salt over it to make lovely crystal-like snowflakes.
If you are doing winter paintings, you can add a falling snow effect using bubble wrap – paint the bubble wrap white and press your painting down on to it. When you lift it up, the bubble wrap print looks like falling snow!
Collective Creature Names
There are some strange collective nouns for animals. How many do you know? A cauldron of bats, a quiver of cobras, an intrusion of cockroaches...a romp of otters. Can you make up some good ones?
Tenby Connects
It was good to meet people at the café (a great place to meet – soup, sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee all for a donation) in the Old Chapel last Saturday, and to see the surplus bread at the Community Fridge being taken away to be used by all sorts of people, and not ending up in the bin. Ian from the Old Chapel has to go to Sainsbury’s to pick this up in the evenings, so many thanks to him – let’s all make it worthwhile by popping in and fetching something from the Fridge and helping to reduce food waste in Tenby. The Community Fridge and the Café are open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 am till around 4 pm, and are in Lower Frog Street, Tenby. Anyone with surplus food that they will not be able to use can also drop it in to the Fridge whenever it is open – there are even stickers for businesses to show that they are helping to reduce food waste by supporting the Community Fridge!
Journey Stick
If you get the chance to get out for a walk in the woods or along the coast, here’s something to do on the way. Take some string with you, and find a stick near the beginning of your walk. Now, keep your eyes peeled for interesting objects along the way. These could be feathers, leaves, seaweed, the choice is yours. Attach these with the string to your stick as you go along, and at the end you will have a record of your journey. Even on the same walk, everyone’s stick will be different. You can compare journey sticks, and share tales of where you found things and why you liked them.
Tenby Edible Garden
This is looking lovely heading into the winter months – thanks to the many volunteers who are looking after it so well. The next step now is to fertilise the soil and start planting winter crops. If anyone is able to provide any natural fertiliser or seeds for planting, please could they drop them round to the Community Garden (the Gilroy Phillips Memorial Garden) on Sutton Street across from Tenby Bowling Club. There is a storage box behind the bench at the back and a little greenhouse where things can be left, and in the corner, there is a compost bin and space for larger donations. However, if someone is able to both donate some natural fertiliser and spread it over the inner bed where the vegetables have been, that would be marvellous! There is still kale and spinach ready to pick, by the way.
Bubbles Rising
Take a few minutes out to try this meditation. Sit comfortably and take a couple of deep breaths. Become aware of the sounds around you. Focus on the sounds reaching your ears. When you find yourself lost in thought, go back from thinking to listening. Try to let things become noises rather than naming them or deciding if they are annoying or pleasing.
Secret Sock Search
Here’s a daft idea for a wet day. Gather as many different pairs of socks as you can, and then go round the house hiding one sock from each pair, apart from one, which you put in your pocket. Anybody else who is playing heads off to find the socks and reunite them one by one with their pairs. The aim is to work out which sock is the pair of the one in your pocket!
