What action is Pembrokeshire County Council taking to ensure the clearance of the eyesore Royal Gatehouse Hotel site in Tenby before next summer?

That's the question the town's longstanding council representative, Clr. Michael Williams, is putting to full council next week.

Clr. Williams has even gone so far in his submission as to call for the authority to undertake investigations into the compulsory purchase of the site - the scene of a huge Easter Bank Holiday inferno - and develop it for the benefit of the community.

Clr. Williams told us this week: "The clearing for redevelopment of this site is vitally important for the town.

"Local authorities have the power to compulsory purchase if it can show that such an act would be of a benefit to a community.

"This might seem to be a somewhat draconian way forward, but when you look at the economic conditions presently prevailing in the town, actions such as this are necessary."

Clr. Williams says that according to legislation, he understands that the authority must have in place a 'Back to Back' developer.

"It would be interesting to see if any such developer would come forward," he said.

Clr. Williams added: "For far too long, public authorities have stood back and left regeneration to the market. The situation is now far too serious for this important site to be left to the whims of the owner.

"We have over 30 years watched the decline of a once superb hotel. Now is the time for action. We have gone through various notices of disrepair to no avail, and now see the Royal Lion in all probability being served with such a notice later this month by the National Park Authority."

Clr. Williams's question will be considered by a full council meeting next Thursday.

• Meanwhile, as reported last week, following a decision by the town council to place a book in their offices open to the public to suggest what they wish to see put in place at the site of the former Gatehouse, a number of ideas have been put forward. One includes a mini version of the Botanical Gardens with a car park surrounding it, while the owners of Tenby's Silent World Aquarium have made a query regarding the site as they are looking to relocate.
