Following on from the sell-out success of the recent Mercurymen gig at the Queen's Hall in March, Span Arts has a new monthly night starting at the Queen's Hall on Saturday, May 9: The Acoustic Sessions.

They'll be bringing some of the best acoustic musicians in the country, from hot contemporary songwriters like Sam Carter to blues legend Chris Smither, from stars of new folk Spiers and Boden to revered guitarist and singer Steve Tilston.

They start on May 9 with rising star Phil King. Phil is a truly great singer, blessed with an amazing voice, his playing is funky, emotional and infused with a whole history of soul. He's often been compared to a young Bill Withers - yes, he really is that good!

His first album 'Leaves' was released in 2006 to rave reviews; now he's got a new album, 'They Come and They Go', released this month, and a single, 'The War I Cannot Win',  which is attracting a lot of interest, including Radio 2 airplay from Steve Lamacq. Phil is definitely one to watch for 2009, and, as with the Mercurymen, this could be a last chance to see him in a smaller venue.

Support will come from Cardiff-based duo The Amber Hour.

Based on the extraordinary  vocal talents of identical twin sisters Hannah and Lucy Dickenson, The Amber Hour have created a sound that is intriguing, innovative and irresistible.

Their songwriting is eerie, their vocal harmonies are uncannily perfect, and their delicate yet powerful playing provides a perfect counterpoint to their distinctive vocal style.

Tickets are £9 or £7 for Span Arts members and concessions, and Span Arts have a special deal on - pay for membership when you buy a ticket and it costs just £10 (normally £15). Doors open at 7.30 and the show will start at 8 pm.
