Nine competitors played eight different instruments at the superb annual competition for Young Musician of the Year organised by the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland recently. The judges, Melanie Walker, Juliet Rossiter and Rebecca Whitehurst, congratulated all the competitors on their splendid performances before awarding first prize to acoustic guitarist, Henry Boyd. The audience had been magically transported back to the Paris of the 1930s and 1940s as Henry, superbly backed by Gethin Hagin on acoustic guitar, played two compositions made famous by the legendary French gypsy guitarist, Django Reinhart. Henry, from Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, Whitland, was presented with the PJ Promotions Challenge Trophy, a cash prize and a certificate and will represent the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland in the zone competition later this year. In second place was Katie Macleod (cello) and third was Laura James (clarinet). Also taking part were Fran Scott (alto saxophone), Hannah Roberts (violin), Elizabeth May Hood (piano), Edward Phillips (trumpet), Wendy Slater (alto saxophone) and Angharad Walters (pedal harp). President Robin Bradbury thanked all the competitors for taking part and the judges for their excellent contribution. "We are also grateful to head teacher Rob Newsome, of Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, and his staff." he said. "Many thanks to Rotarian Neil Jackson for organising the event and to the ladies of Inner Wheel for the refreshments."
