Two members of Brawdy Young Farmers' Club have tasted national success after winning a prestigious competition.

William Lawrence and Nigel Raymond triumphed over teams from all over England and Wales to win the Farm Business Development competition at the Royal Show.

This year's task required competitors to bid for a farm business tenancy for a 340-hectare mixed farm and submit a business plan to support their tender.

One of the judges, George Dunn, chief executive of the Tenant Farmers Association (TFA), said the case study farm was a difficult one for a new entrant to bid for and he and fellow judges, farmer Jim Harrison and NFYFC's,agriculture and rural affairs chairman Rob Harrison, were looking for a proposal that didn't try to achieve too much too quickly.

Winning pair William and Nigel did just that, suggesting that the core farming enterprises be retained, but simplified and that farm buildings on two different sites be converted into stables for a livery enterprise and commercial offices to let. They planned to apply for a Rural Enterprise Scheme grant for the conversion work which would add value to the landlord's property, while creating enterprises that would generate income.

The proposals were judged on their economic viability, innovation, compatibility with farm resources and long-term potential. The competition was sponsored by the TFA.

Chairman Reg Haydon said: "It's great to see young farmers taking part in the competition because learning how to present a business plan and look for a reasonable rent is a very important step." Brawdy YFC members also tasted success in the recent county Indoor Sports competition, when they beat their counterparts from Tiers Cross in the final. The competition has been running since September and comprises draughts, dominoes and tippit.
