Sir,
Guide Dogs Cymru and RNIB Cymru are pleased to hear that action is being taken to reduce the danger caused to people with sight loss by A-frames on pavements (Zero tolerance stance to be adopted on A-frames in Tenby, Friday, July 7).
We understand that businesses wish to advertise, but unpredictable and unexpected obstacles like A-frames put blind and partially sighted people at risk every time they try to get out and about independently.
Going out with a guide dog or a long cane requires skill and confidence, and walking into an obstacle is painful and embarrassing. People with sight loss should have the same freedom of movement as everyone else, and we would encourage pavements to be kept clear of all obstructions, including chairs and tables from cafes, merchandise and bins.
Where businesses have a licence from the council, careful consideration should be given to ensuring that there is a safe area of pavement for pedestrians, and to locating A-frames against the building line. If people with sight loss know where A-frames should be placed, there is less risk that they will hurt themselves by walking into them.
