Pembroke Town Walls Trust are leading a series of walks around the town and the walls to engage with the community as part of their project to plan the long-term restoration and management of Pembroke’s medieval town walls. The project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund and managed by Pembrokeshire County Council.
Following a request from a group from Saundersfoot for a walk around the walls, Howard Rudge, Trustee of the Pembroke Town Walls Trust and a historian and guide at Pembroke Castle, led the first walk for around twenty people along the Main Street and the North Walls.
June Howells, leader of the group said, “Howard met our group at Barnard’s Tower, then led us through centuries of history from East Gate Square to Wogan's Cavern. Many of us are local, but his breadth of knowledge was astonishing, and as impressive as it was fascinating. We particularly enjoyed hearing about individual houses and their residents in by-gone times, and of Oliver Cromwell’s attempts to take the town in the Civil War. Our guide certainly brought the past to life - in technicolour! What an asset he is to the Castle and the town - long may his guiding continue.”
The walk ended appropriately by the statue of Henry VII on the site of the former Pembroke Mill on Pembroke Mill Bridge.
Having started their walk earlier around Holyland Wood before joining Howard, the walkers headed to Pembroke Castle’s Kitchen restaurant for an absolutely delicious lunch.
Further walks are planned over the coming three month. For more information go to www.pembroketownwallstrust.org.uk
