A Saundersfoot man caught drink-driving has been told that he will have to rely on using a push bike to get to work for the next few months after being handed a 19 month motoring ban.

Twenty-four-year-old Jake Vickery, of Vineyard Vale, Wooden, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday, to plead guilty to a charge of driving a a Vauxhall Corsa, on The Ridgeway near his home after exceeding the prescribed limit of alcohol.

Prosecutor Vaughan Pritchard-Jones told the court that police officers on routine patrol stopped the defendant in his vehicle at around 4.20 am on February 9 after they spotted Mr. Vickery driving with a rear light out.

Officer’s could smell alcohol on the driver’s breath, and when they conducted a roadside breath test it showed a reading of 78 mircogrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

“After his arrest the reading at the police station was higher at 79, which suggests that the defendant must have had something to drink shortly before being stopped,” explained Mr. Pritchard-Jones.

Defence solicitor Mike Kelleher told the court that his client has no previous convictions.

“Mr. Vickery would normally take his car out and then get a taxi home, but unfortunately it was pouring down with rain this night and there were no taxis around, so he made the foolish decision to drive.

“He knows that he not only out himself in danger but others too.

“He can travel to work via push bike if needed,” added Mr. Kelleher.

Magistrates disqualified Mr. Vickery from driving for 19 months and fined him £136 for the offence.
