A motorist stopped near Tenby with a quantity of cocaine in his vehicle has appeared in court.

Forty-two-year-old William David Smith, of Pier Road, Milford Haven, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday, to plead guilty to a charge of possessing 8 grams of the Class A drug.

Prosecutor Abul Hussain told the court that the defendant’s vehicle was stopped on the A478 road by police officers on May 4.

“Mr. Smith was asked if he had any substances on him and he produced three wraps of cocaine from his wallet,” he said.

Magistrates heard that Mr. Smith had four previous convictions for drugs matters on record and was handed a prison term in 2016 for possession and supplying.

His defence solicitor told the court that the drugs were for his own personal use, as he had friends down from London that he hadn’t seen for a while, and he ‘gave into temptation’.

Mr. Smith who owns a property management company, regretted the matter which was an ‘isolated’ incident, the court heard.

In sentencing, magistrates stated that they had looked at Mr. Smith’s past record which they said ‘wasn’t good’ and fined the defendant £675 for the offence.

They also ordered him to pay costs of £85 and a £67 victim surcharge.
