A mother and daughter in trouble on a paddle board - swept around the headland and trapped at sea by the flood tide were rescued by the crew of a Pembrokeshire lifeboat yesterday.

St Davids all-weather lifeboat was tasked to assist a mother and daughter on a paddle board who had called for help in the Abereiddy Bay area at 5.15pm on Thursday, August 21.

The lifeboat proceeded to the location where it became apparent that the casualties had been swept around the headland and trapped at sea by the flood tide, unable to return to shore in the north easterly winds.

St Davids Coastguard rescue team were also in attendance and directed the lifeboat straight to the casualties as they had visual on them from the coast path. One casualty was sat on the SUP board whilst the other was in the water holding the board.

The casualties were quickly brought on board the lifeboat and provided with blankets to keep warm whilst a casualty assessment was conducted. With both casualties deemed alert and well, but a little shaken and cold from the ordeal, it was decided to land them back ashore at Abereiddy from where they had paddled out.

The daughter boat was deployed and both casualties plus paddle board taken ashore to be met by St Davids Coastguard.

Will Chant, RNLI Coxswain for St Davids RNLI lifeboat, said: “This rescue demonstrates the importance of carrying a means of calling for help when going to sea and the casualties did the right thing in remaining calm whilst awaiting our arrival.

“I’d like to thank both St Davids Coastguard rescue team and Milford Haven Coastguard for their tremendous assistance in co-ordinating this rescue.”
