A major incident has been declared on Pembrokeshire’s Cleddau Bridge involving a 52-seater bus and a vehicle.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service who are on the scene with police and ambulance services, has stated that many of the bus passengers are suffering with various injuries.

Dyfed-Powys Police stated: “Police are in attendance at a road traffic collision which occurred on the A477 near the Cleddau Bridge, Pembroke Dock at about 2.15 pm today, Tuesday, September 5t

“The A477 is currently closed between the Honeyborough roundabout and the Pembroke roundabout and road users are advised to take an alternative route.

“Please avoid the area and find alternative routes for your journey.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called today, Tuesday, September 5, at approximately 2.14 pm, to reports of a road traffic collision on the A477.

“We sent five emergency ambulances, one duty operations manager, one Cymru High Acuity Response Unit and non-emergency patient transport service vehicles to the scene. We were supported by colleagues from the Wales Air Ambulance.”

A spokesperson for the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 2.19 pm on Tuesday, September 5th, the Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Tenby and Narberth crews were called to an incident on the Cleddau Bridge, Pembroke Dock.

“Crews responded to a road traffic collision involving one 52-seater bus and one private motor vehicle. Many of the bus passengers are suffering with various injuries.

“One driver is currently severely trapped, crews are currently working to extract the trapped driver as well as administering first aid. The Air Ambulance and Dyfed Powys Police are also in attendance.

“This has been declared a major incident which is currently ongoing, more information may be released when available.”

One eye-witness stated: “It's directly outside our driveway. This is for sure the worst traffic accident I've ever seen. Everyone standing around seems to be in good spirits so I hope there's been no tragedy.”

Wales’ First Minister Mark Drakeford has also commented, posting on X (formerly Twitter) within the last few minutes: “Worrying to hear news of a major incident on the Cleddau Bridge. Details are still emerging.

“My thoughts are with all those involved and my thanks to the first responders and emergency services working at the scene.”

Pembrokeshire County Council has stated within the past half an hour: “Access to the bridge remains closed from the Pembroke Dock side. The road between Neyland and the Cleddau Bridge remains closed.

“Travel to Pembroke Dock can only be accessed via Burton. Roads are expected to be extremely busy, please take extra care.”

The fire service provided the following update shortly before 5 pm: “Most of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service's crews have now been stood down from this incident.”
