A motorist caught drink-driving in Saundersfoot has been handed a prison term after admitting to being too intoxicated to attempt a breath-test.
Fifty-three-year-old Carl Cogbill, of High Street, Fleur-de-Lis, Caerphilly, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis when he appeared before Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Sian Vaughan told the court how a police officer was approached by a member of a public about a suspected drunk-driver in Saundersfoot village, shortly after 9 pm, on March 10.
The defendant was found leaning against his parked car, which had sustained substantial damage, and the police officer could smell alcohol on him.
Magistrates heard that when the police officer spoke to Mr. Cogbill, he was extremely unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred.
He was conveyed to Haverfordwest police station, but was unable to provide a breath sample for analysis as he was ‘too intoxicated’ to approach the machine.
The court heard that the defedant was convicted of a similar offence in 2011.
Defence solicitor Stacey Holmes told the court that her client had been out drinking that day, and had consumed four or five pints of Strongbow while on anti-depressants.
“He had intended to get a taxi back home because he felt unwell, but the last thing he remembers is waking up at the police station,” she said.
Magistrates jailed Mr. Cogbill for a period of 12 weeks and disqualified him from driving for four years.
He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £115 victim surcharge.
