A Tenby electrician has been charged in court with drink-driving after being reported to police for driving with no lights on.

Sixty-two-year-old Robert Morgan, of Glen View Crescent, pleaded guilty to driving his BMW on the A478, after exceeding the prescribed limit of alcohol, when he appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Vaughan Pritchard-Jones told the court that police were called by a member of the public on October 5, at around 11 pm, to report the defendant driving on the A478 New Hedges road, slowly and with no lights on.

“The witness got out of their car and went to Mr. Morgan’s vehicle which had come to a complete halt and asked the driver if he was alright. They later ’phoned the police as they were concerned by the manner of the defendant’s driving,” explained Mr. Pritchard-Jones.

“Police officers went to Mr. Morgan’s house and by now his car was back on his driveway. He told them that his last drink had been an hour previously so there was no suggestion of post-driving drinking.

“Mr. Morgan provided a positive sample and a reading of 99 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath at the station, which is a high reading.

“The defendant, who is an electrician, told officers that it was his night off, but he’d received a callout and been let down by a colleague so he felt that he needed to go out. He has a clean driving licence and is of entirely clean character,” he added.

Defence solicitor Mark Layton told the court that his client had consumed a couple of glasses of wine with his meal that night, and thought he wouldn’t be over the limit.

Magistrates disqualified Mr. Morgan from driving for 24 months and fined him £320 for the offence.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £32 victim surcharge.
