Sir,

Many of your readers will be past pupils of Tenby's Greenhill School, but may not be aware that the 'new school' in Heywood Lane accepted its first pupils through its brand new doors 50 years ago this coming September.

I had spent my first year of upper schooling at the Tenby Grammar School, which is now the Tenby Library and Community Centre, and was one of those first pupils in September 1961. In today's terms I began Year 8 (the old Year 2) in room 303 with Mr. Gareth James and my classmates. (This was the era when Grammar Schools disappeared in favour of Secondary Modern Schools).

I really enjoyed my school days at Greenhill. Happy memories include lots of sport eg. hockey, athletics, gymnastics, rounders and tennis played with my friends under the guidance mainly of Mrs. Penny Hilling and Mr. Denzil Thomas.

After only one year away, I joined the staff as secretary replacing Mrs. Jocelyn Fry in September, 1967. (My friend, Monica John, had already replaced Mrs. Sutcliffe in the office). We served Mr. L. G. Hill as headmaster for a number of years before we both left to have and raise our families in 1975.

My contact with Greenhill has never really ended because my own children were educated there and I myself, returned in 2002 to work in the Special Educational Needs Dept (now the Additional Needs Dept) where I remain to this day.

Some of the staff are forming a committee to celebrate '50 years at Greenhill' and would appreciate suggestions, loan of photographs and memorabilia, etc. to display at an exhibition we hope to hold in mid-September. There will also be a concert and other celebrations during the same week. Suggestions encouraged!

Please be kind enough to contact the school on (01834) 840100 or write to us' 'The 50 Year Celebration Committee' as soon as possible.

Meryl Rowen

(nee Evans),

Tenby.
