A proposed traffic order which would have seen the introduction of a 40mph speed limit on the A478 heading towards Tenby, all the way from near the New Hedges roundabout to Moreton has been discontinued, with a new proposal expected to be considered in due course, local councillors have heard.

Plans to turn a section of the A478 road coming into Tenby from 50mph to 40mph had been under consideration by Pembrokeshire County Council.

The section of the A478 road [just off the Crane Cross Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre] - on the main route towards Tenby from the south of Moreton to a point south of the junction with Sandyhill Road - was being considered by the Local Authority.

However, at the recent meeting of East Williamston Community Council, county councillor for the ward Cllr Jacob Williams (who was opposing the plans) told members that the plan had been scrapped, with a new proposal in the pipeline.

He also said that guidance was also awaited from the Welsh Government relating to 30mph sections of road, which Cllr Williams said he hoped in the future could be extended to include Moreton, which was currently 40mph.

As Moreton was a hamlet Cllr Williams told members of the Community Council that he believed the case for reducing the speed limit there was more obvious than the lengthy speed reduction which the highways department had proposed to introduce on the Tenby road, which emerged in response to concerns near the farm shop.

Cllr Williams said that a more targeted, proportionate, approach should have been taken from the start.

His fellow county councillor, Cllr Chris Williams who represents Saundersfoot’s south ward, had shown support for the speed limit being reduced in that area, which he said responded directly to concerns from the community, and feedback from local businesses and residents.
