A proud ex-serviceman has celebrated his 100th birthday at a Pembroke Dock residential home.

Albert ‘Bertie’ Rees celebrated the occasion at Apley Lodge, on Tuesday, with a visit by Pembrokeshire County Council chairman, Clr. Wynne Evans, and Pembroke Dock Mayor, Clr. Peter Kraus.

Pembrokeshire-born and bred, Bertie is a native of Angle where he spent most of his life. He never married but, after their father died, he brought up his two nieces Pam and Edna.

He worked in the building trade and on the council houses in Bush Estate, Pembroke Dock. He was later employed on the construction of the Regent refinery by local contractors, McEntee.

During the Second World War, he served in the Medical Corps in the Far East for which he was awarded The Burma Star. He was also awarded the King George Medal and the Defence Medal for his war service.

Bertie finally ended his working days at the grand age of 84, employed by the Allen-Mirehouse family, of Angle.

He has been a resident of Apley Lodge for almost 10 years and to mark the special day, staff at the home dressed in 1940s costume
