Wednesday Sailing
A pleasant sunny evening with a southerly breeze saw four Ospreys and a Redwing contest the latest of the club's Wednesday series in a race run by Dan Jackson.
An upwind start at Monkstone saw the fleet away together for a long beat to the Southern where the Ospreys arrived together, turning right there and spinnakers up for a broadish reach in to the harbour mark, gybing there and back out to Monkstone.
Ted and Matt reached the windward mark on starboard and this gave them right of way, enabling them to round first, hoist spinnaker and power away, building a lead they retained to the end. Mike and Deanna were nip and tuck with Paul and Anthea Evenden competing well in a mounting breeze and by the end of the first reach those two were ahead of Paul and Steve by about 20 yards.
Over the second lap, the racing between those three Ospreys remained close, with several position changes, and at the finish Paul and Anthea took second by the smallest of margins from Mike and Deanna in third and Paul and Steve in fourth. The Redwing, sailed by Bill and Nan Dowell plugged away at the back, being a much slower boat than the Ospreys, but well in contention, finishing only 10 seconds behind the fourth Osprey on corrected time.
Sunday Sailing
Sunday morning provided excellent sailing conditions after the recent rain and gales. A brisk 3 to 4 westerly and bright sunshine enabled everyone to enjoy themselves, with plenty of incidents to talk about after.
Paul Evenden, PRO, set a triangular course upwind from Monkstone to the harbour, out to the southern and back to Monkstone. Seven boats competed, with the GP of Paul and Anne Thomas and the Mirror of Sian May both opting to stay close to shore out of the stronger winds.
In division one, four Ospreys and a Fireball had a competitive morning all away promptly at both starts. In the first race, the Alistairs, back on the water after an early summer break, took an early bath going upwind when they got so tangled up in the spinnaker halyard they capsized. In front of them, a ding dong battle developed between Mike and Deanna and Paul and Steve, for second and third, with Ted and Matt out in front. Paul and Steve grabbed second going upwind and just did enough to protect it from Mike and Deanna on the downwind legs. The Fireball brought up the rear staying upright and flying spinnaker where possible.
In the second race, a battle developed for first between Ted and Matt and Mike and Deanna; for the first lap Mike and Deanna reached the windward mark first and headed off downwind with a lead of 20 yards or so, which they protected all the way to the next beat and most of the way up that. Right at the end of the beat, Ted and Matt slipped past and shot off downwind to take the win. Meanwhile, Paul and Steve had spinnaker issues and retired; the Alistairs took third from Richard and Bill in the Fireball in fourth.
In division two, Jamie Bohata in the 420 battled with John Mckellor in the Comet, both enjoying some fast sailing in the conditions, and both upright for most of the time!. In race one, John beat Jamie, but this was reversed in race two, so honours were even.
Annual
Passage Race
Weather permitting, the annual Hobbs Point to Tenby Passage race will take place tomorrow (Saturday), with the first yachts reaching Tenby at about 2 pm. Hopefully the tall ship, Johanna Lucretia, will also take part in the race. This magnificent ship should arrive in Tenby mid-afternoon.
Howard
Howard will be catering this (Friday) evening only. The highly acclaimed steak pie gets better and better! As usual, after the annual Passage race, Terry Evans's legendary BBQ will be on offer tomorrow evening
Opening Hours
The club will be open on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtime until further notice.
Junior Section
Yet again we were lucky with weather, with the wind abating just in time with 20 boats on the water. The Wednesday sessions are certainly proving popular, with the register of trainees expanding week by week. And of course the legendary Terry Evans BBQ attracted the ravenous masses.
The inaugural junior 'cruise in company' did not take placer due to various factors. Hopefully it will now take place on Sunday, July 8, weather permitting - please let Blake know if you intend to participate.
Weekly Draw
The 24th draw took place last Saturday - the owner of the winning ticket was not present, so tomorrow's draw is a rollover. The draw was independently verified by the draw master, Paul Redford.
As mentioned above, the next draw takes place tomorrow evening at 9 pm when the prize will be £90. Please note - you must be present and have your membership card with you to claim the prize!
Humour
Having passed the enlistment physical, Jon was asked by the doctor, "Why do you want to join the Navy, son?"
"My father said it would be a good idea, sir."
"Oh? And what does your father do?"
"He's in the Army, sir."
