Ruth Goldwait and Isabel Kent, representing Tenby Golf Club, have reached the finals of the prestigious Daily Mail Amateur Foursomes Golf Tournament.

Played annually by teams from all over the UK, this involves seven rounds of play following a qualifying competition at each local club. The competition has run for over 50 years, and trawling through recent records, it seems that Tenby have never before been represented in the final.

This year, over 1,500 teams entered the first round draw in January; the number has now been whittled down to just 16 teams, who will compete for the Daily Mail Silver Challenge Trophy at The Forest of Arden Hotel & Country Club course near Coventry between October 14 and 16.

Fortunate to receive an early bye, and one subsequent walkover (due to an opponent's injury), Ruth and Isabel's campaign has seen them score away victories at Derllys Court and St. Davids City and home wins against Trefloyne, Pennard and most recently Belmont Lodge.

Round seven was played on the Tenby course on Bank Holiday Monday, and even by the recent poor standard of summer weather, conditions were absolutely atrocious, so it was a particularly well-earned 3 and 2 success against ladies who had travelled from Belmont Lodge in Hereford.

Their achievement is all the more worthy considering they had never paired up to play in this demanding format before this season's qualifying round at Tenby. By coincidence, though, both ladies are previous PE specialists, and this competition has obviously brought out their competitive streaks.

Ruth, a local business owner and longstanding member of Tenby Golf Club, said after reaching the final: "From our first game Isabel and I have gelled well together. The seventh round was a fantastic win in such dreadful conditions. I am thrilled to be representing Tenby in the finals. It will be a wonderful three days of golf for us, and we will give every effort to continue our winning streak."

Isabel, who only moved to the area three years ago after a full career in the Royal Navy, said: "For me, just reaching the final is a wonderful achievement, particularly the manner of our round seven victory. We go to The Forest of Arden under no pressure and I intend to just enjoy the whole experience.
