Last Sunday, Tenby Golf Club held its strokeplay championship. The top players compete for the 36-hole gross prize and the winner receives the Cobb Cup. The golfer with the best nett aggregate is awarded the Regimental Bowl, the club's oldest trophy. On a glorious sunny day, the field faced a two-club south-westerly in the morning, but this had eased slightly following lunch. As with most courses in the county, the famous links suffered somewhat over the very wet winter, but it is now getting back towards its best. The greens, in particular, were wonderful and they became slicker in the afternoon as the sun became hotter. Dan Farmer led both the gross and the nett events at lunchtime. His 73-1=72 was one better than Richard Morton (76-3=73) and Chris Hughes (79-6=73) in the nett. In the gross, he was three less than Morton and four below John Morris and Matthew Moseley, who both returned 77s. Farmer, who is a member of both Tenby and Haverfordwest, has been club services and coach education manager with the Golfing Union of Wales since May 2013. He has masters degrees from both Loughborough and Wales Universities. Dave Morris unfortunately signed for an incorrect score in the morning, but made some amends later with a fine 72-2=70. In the nett category, it was closely followed by Craig Thomas (87-16=71) and Neil Thomas (81-9=72). Farmer maintained his excellent form with a 74-1=73. He had four birdies in each round and amazingly these were on the 5th, 6th, 14th and 16th, both before and after the interval. He finished with two bogeys in his second round, which could have been costly. However, the best round of the day was Moseley's 71+2=73 in the afternoon. He bogeyed the 8th, 10th and 11th, but birdied the 4th and 16th and eagled the 14th, but in the morning, sixes on the 4th and 8th were his undoing. Moseley, also a member at Carmarthen, has recently completed a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science at Michigan State University. During his three years in the USA, he competed successfully in the collegiate events. He is a Welsh international and he hopes to become a professional on the European Tour. Thus, after 36 energy-sapping holes, Farmer, who is a very likable young man, triumphed in both the Cobb Cup (147) and the Regimental Bowl (145). He has also had his handicap reduced from one back to scratch. Moseley's aggregate in the Cobb Cup was just one higher, Morris was third by virtue of a better back nine than Morton, who both totalled 154. Morris's error cost him third position. Up and coming Craig Thomas, a very keen golfer, claimed runner-up spot in the Regimental Bowl (146) and the consistent left-hander Jon Bolter pushed Morton back to another fourth place after both had aggregated 148. The leading scores were as follows: Best scores in the morning: Daniel Farmer 73-1=72; Richard Morton 76-3=73; Chris Hughes 79-6=73; Lewis Hurlow 83-9=74; Jon Bolter 78-4=74; Robert Willcox 83-9=74; Craig Thomas 91-16=75; Timothy Davies 87-12=75; Darren Thomas 83-8=75; Laurent Phillips 86-11-75; Simon Jones 87-12=75. Tenby's league form continues

Glyn Abbey Golf Club were the visitors to Tenby Golf Club on Saturday for the home side's fourth Dyfed League fixture. Conditions were warm and the recent weather has enhanced the course, especially the greens. The top pair of Ben Childs and Darren Thomas won their second consecutive game, by a margin of 4 and 3. Second out were the new pairing of Chris Thompson and Terry Davies, both big hitters, who triumphed 3 and 2. Next out were the speedy duo of Paul Jenkins and Neil Thomas, who overcame a fightback to the opposition to win 2 and 1. The biggest win of the afternoon came from Andrew Cope and the in-form Lewis Hurlow, who were victorious by 7 and 5. The fifth game was the tightest, but Steve Sutcliffe and Ian Thomas overcame their opponents on the last green after a titanic struggle. Gareth Phillips and Loz Phillips (not related - thank goodness!) were worthy winners by 6 and 4 and tailenders John Stenson and Jerry Whitehouse also won by a similar margin to secure a 7-0 victory for Tenby. Tenby have now claimed wins in their first four league matches, albeit three of these have been at home. The next match, away to Glyn Abbey on May 31, will be a very stern test.
