Was it only a week ago that this article started, 'Fortunately, the weather was kind' - this week the weather was not so kind and the first two hours of the match at Cardigan were particularly wet and unattractive. However, the clouds did manage to roll away and the back end of the match enjoyed dry conditions, if not actual sunshine.

The Cardigan seniors made the Tenby team very welcome, as always, and the 19 players on each side made a two tee start to the match. This fixture, and the return home match, has been a feature of the seniors' summer series for so long that most of the players are familiar with each other - in a strictly golfing sense of course!

Both teams enjoyed the competition, and later the match meal in the clubhouse. Six lucky winners enjoyed the raffle - but 32 losers were not as content!

This week's happy player? - Ken Gouldsbrough, who won his match and a bottle of wine in the raffle. This week's sad player? - Brian 'The Raffle' Morgan, who - like his partner - played like a drone. Brian was last seen searching for a deep lake into which he could hurl his clubs. (He'll be OK by next Thursday).

Finally, the team captains, Jim Martin from Tenby and Nigel Clarke from Cardigan, addressed the players - who were agog with curiosity concerning the outcome of the contest. They broke the welcome news that Tenby had been victorious, by a margin of six games to four - yes!

The photograph shows the captains shaking hands as the teams dispersed. We look forward to Cardigan's return visit on August 28.

See you there!

Rabbits whitewash Carmarthen - well nearly!

The first game of the new Three Counties Summer League campaign for Tenby Rabbits saw 10 pairs from Carmarthan come to play the links on a sunny, but somewhat windy Sunday.

With the home side only managing to field seven pairs, the rest of the Carmarthan boys had courtesy of the course and were hoping that the others could carry on their unbeaten record for the season, having played three and won three already.

Alas this was not to be, due to the Tenby captain's expert selection of pairings, which meant shots were equally divided and games were soon concluded by the 14th hole in the home side's favour.

Only one match went the distance, but a superb second shot to the 18th from Gavin Field Thomas left his opponents conceding after a close chip to the hole and a result of two up.

Once in the clubhouse, a very smart Tony Morris set the tone. However, it was pointed out to him that, like Phil Collins, there was 'No Jacket Required'.

Captain Tim Davies gave a short speech to all and the Carmarthan skipper congratulated Tenby on a good win by six matches to one (wonder who lost!).

Next game is away at Glyn Abbey on May 20. Please let the captain know if you are available, and let's hope Mark and Richard can improve...

Tenby march on in Ping Challenge

Tenby Team played their first round of the Ping Challenge at Cardigan on Bank Holiday Monday, against St. Giles (Newtown).

St Giles were brimming with confidence. having been one time winners and twice runners-up in the final in previous years.

The weather was awful, though not quite as bad as we had been led to expect. Three holes were played in a hailstone blizzard, when one team lost their way momentarily and nearly missed out a par three. The rest of the game was played in cold, windy drizzle, off and on, but the warm spirit of golf made up for the cool conditions.

All three matches were closely fought and could have gone either way. Tenby's president, Mervyn Tucker, and his partner, Heather Morgan, went out first against Barbara and Steve (handicaps 8 and 14). With only one shot in it, they were pretty evenly balanced and until the 13th it was nip and tuck. Then Heather and Mervyn won three holes to lie dormie three, before halving the 16th to win, thanks to a lovely putt from the president.

Chris and Carol Beecher were out second against Joan and John. This pairing has been unbeaten in all the times they have represented Tenby in the Ping Challenge, but Joan and John had the same record. Again there were only two shots given by Tenby, so the teams were well matched. Again the match was very even until the last few holes when St. Giles got the upper hand.

Ladies' captain, Vicky Burks, and Rob Hall were the final pair out against Nicky and Graham. They had a rocky start; not helped by Rob's trolley packing up on the first hole, so he had to discard it and carry his clubs. However, undaunted, they fought back to all-square and then again went ahead after the 14th to win 3 and 2.

Well done Team Tenby and thank you to St. Giles for giving such good matches. Now we wait to see who we face in the next round.

Cup success for Michael

Michael Schooling enjoyed a good couple days on the Tenby links over the Bank Holiday weekend.

He followed up his fourth place in the May Medal on Saturday by winning the Hotels Cup on Monday.

His winning score in the open stableford cup competition was 38 points, two clear of his two nearest rivals, one of them being father Roger.

Disappointingly, though, only 14 players took part in the event, with the leading scores and prize winners being as follows:

1. Michael Schooling 38 pts (Hotel Cup and £16); 2. Rees Simon Davies 36 (£12); 3. Roger Schooling 36 (£4); 4. Gareth Davies 34 (£1.50).

Bag draw: John Ball, Rees Davies (£7 each).

Pro shop draw: Roger Schooling (sleeve of five-piece Penta balls).

Twos: There were no twos - rollover to the Natwest Cup.

Handicap changes: Stephen Cole 19 to 20, Timothy Davies 11 to 12, Michael Schooling 6 to 5.
