2016 is now well underway for the club and 112kg of fish have been weighed in so far. With Spring hopefully approaching, the club is settling into its warmer weather routine of night matches, Pendine extravaganzas, roving events and mid-week bunfights. Let’s hope the weather smiles on us!
Results of recent matches are as follows:
March 13, Rover - Twelve anglers, including one of our super keen juniors, booked in at the multi-storey. On the one hand, at least there would be no rain, but on the other, where to go? The more youthful members (and Haydn) seemed to fancy a crack at the Huss and Cai Bach whilst the Care Home Corp of Barry, Nev and Garf seemed to favour more local adventures. Travis and Harvey fancied a shot at an early bass and possible flounders. Off we shot at 2 pm. And we sat in the sun for the day.
Things were very quiet on the message front during the match and, as usual, more than a little interest was shown in the photos and weights of the fish that had been landed and returned.
Cai Bach had been rather slow. Fresh East also until dark. Amroth produced also after dark, but there had been a flurry of fish from Stackpole, Gellyswick and Milford, albeit mostly undersized.
In-size fish carded were conger, 3 Bearded Rockling, 5 Bearded Rockling, Dogs (of course), Pollack, Herring (yes really!), Whiting and Flounder (from the Haven!) And the final weight tally showed Dads Army triumphant, with Barry notching another two new species at the same time.
1. Barry and Nev, 4.017kg; 2. Haydn and Mark, 2.410k; 3. Travis and Harvey, 2.324kg.
And another 12kg for the club aggregate on a difficult day, fish-wise.
March 19, South Beach, Night Owl - I found it difficult to use my usual creativity… 13 anglers, including two juniors fished, just a couple of dogs.
1. Returning member Mr. Kenneth Badham; 2. Ben McD; 3.Brian Twose
At least that’s South Beach out the way for another year (or century!!)
March 30, Mid Week - The latest match was surprisingly good, at least in parts and for some. A pleasant evening, but with an Arctic chill still hanging round, meaning hand-warmer time for some of the older guys. Twelve booked in, including junior Tom and the majority shot off to Ol’ Faithful Stackpole. Garf and Mike D cannily slid to Lydstep and Barry N and ‘Special Brew’ headed off to Precipe, very much an interesting choice at this time of year.
Weigh-in was eagerly set up by Adam and Pugs and we all presented our ‘mahoosive’ catches. Ok, there weren’t buckets of fish, but the tally included conger (Ben McD again!), Pollack (yes, Ben), 3 bearded rockling (Paul Jenks) Flounder (Eh? Mike D!) and Whiting (Get in Garf!) and the ubiquitous dogs.
1. Ben McD, Conger 1.170kg; 2. Mike D, Bag 2.432kg; 3. Prima Barrylina, LSD 0.954kg;
Nice little match and 13kg to the club total.
Some nice individual fish to comment on include Paul Jenks’s nice 3 bearded rockling which took the March Fish of the Month title and cracking bigger species for Dan Thomas and Lewis Brann, a conger of 21lb 8oz (photo attached) and bull huss of 9lb 8oz (photo attached), respectively.
We now have three matches in quick succession. Sunday, April 10, sees a Rover, fishing in company only and two rods allowed. Book in at Hobbs Point, leave at 1 pm and back by 10 pm sharp. Then on Thursday, April 14, we start our Pendine assault in earnest. Booking in at the top of the slip, gate will be opened at 7 pm, lines in as soon as you wish. Lines out at 11 pm and weigh-in back at the slip. Then again on Sunday, April 17, a daylight trip to Pendine subject to MoD firing arrangements as usual. Fishing will be between 10 am and 2 pm. All things being equal, the gate will be opened at 9.30 am.
