With the arrival of the better weather, members have been taking advantage of this both on the shore and afloat. In addition to our usual shore report, members had a most enjoyable day afloat from Dale with Andy, of Broadside Charters.
May 24, charter boat trip: Seven members gathered at Dale pontoon early on a misty summer morning for a long-awaited inshore trip around the stunning West Pembs coast. First stop was Martin's Haven where the mackerel bait for the day was popped into the buckets.
We then enjoyed and employed a variety of terrains and tactics in catching a total of nine species throughout the day. Off the reefs came a steady stream of Coalfish and Pollack and Bob Willing hauled up the largest fish of the day, a 5.25lb Pollack. Bob used the time honoured flowing trace and head hooked rag worm method and took the Boyne Boat Cup as a result.
Then we spent some time on the Knoll bank and, much to everyone's surprise, a steady stream of lovely plate-sized Plaice were landed. Senior member Mike Dixon used his usual expertise and combination of attractor beads to show the way and was first to catch them 'two at a time'.
We were delighted with the day out and pleasantly surprised to find a skipper that supplies excellent tea! No surprise that we've booked to go again on June 28.
May 27, Pendine beach match: The next beach match saw competitors gather for an evening attempt at one of our favourite beaches in search of the elusive shore Bass. Access to the beach had been granted as usual and we were greeted by rather more cloud cover and a better surf than had been anticipated.
Reports during the match indicated that there had been a fair amount of action early on, but it turned out to be mostly undersized fish. At the weigh in, just Nev had managed a long but thin, in size Bass and duly took the top points and money.
Result - 1. Nev Andrews, Bass 0.964kg.
The next match is today (Friday) and takes place on South Beach. This is the next in the Night Owl series and will be fished from 9 pm to 1 am. Would competitors please note that the booking in will now take place at Penally Train Station and NOT the South Beach Car Park.
Any further information at any time just call Nev on 07500 417737 or check out the club's website and Facebook pages.
