Sunshine and blue skies greeted the 22 pairs who played in the fifth annual Mixed Christmas Charity Greensomes at Tenby Golf Club on Saturday. It is planned to be held between Christmas and New Year, though last year it was March before we could play due to the weather. How different it was on this occasion. The greens were superb, the fairways now recovered and the only stumbling block was our own golf ability!
However, this kind format of Greensome Foursomes from the yellow boxes and off the Ladies' card, as always, led to some excellent scoring. There was a battle for third place between Roger Schooling and Maura Rimell versus Bev Owen and Barrie Frayne, both on 39 points. However, the back nine clinched the prize for Roger and Maura.
The second place couple, our very own popular Ben Price from the Pro Shop and Gill John, were in the lead in the clubhouse most of the afternoon, but were beaten just before the end of the competition. They had an amazing 43 points. The victors with an even more phenomenal 47 points were Chris and Helen Hughes.
Chris thanked his playing partners Craig and Georgina for keeping them going, and Heather for her work in running the competition.
There was only one two, which was on the 17th by Jeremy and Bethan Morris, and Bethan also won the prize for nearest the pin. It was in a very tricky position, so her 3.22 metres was applauded by all.
A total of £350 was raised today for the captain's charity, the Paul Sartori Foundation, and a lot of thanks must be given to those that helped raise such a grand sum.
First of all the sponsors of the event, Welsh Sweets and Treats, Tenby, Rumbleway Caravans, New Hedges, and Mervyn Tucker. This enabled all entry fees to go to the charity. Then there was a raffle which was run by David Morgan and Laura McQueen with help from Idwal David and Sarah Waring. There were some super raffle prizes thanks to the generosity of members, and thanks also to Sainsbury's, Tesco, Boots, Mountain Warehouse, Tenby Book Shop, Equinox, Tenby Post Office and Morris Brothers.
Thanks to Tom for all his work in the Pro Shop, and to Laura for all her help with the running of the competition. Finally, a huge thank you must go to our new catering team for putting on a fabulous three-course dinner for us all. It made for a wonderful atmosphere in the clubhouse and rounded off a great day.
Our next mixed event is not until Saturday, February 14, and it will go up on the computer on Saturday, January 24.
Happy New Year to all our competitors and may 2015 be the year you get your names on the boards.
H.K.M.
