On the eve of the Superbowl in Las Vegas - a Saundersfoot native has come up trumps in a different sport for one of the NFL’s most decorated and iconic superstars!
Saundersfoot’s Sam Coleman continues to make a splash across the globe in the sport of powerboating, now racing for one of the world’s most successful sports stars, seven-times Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.
Earlier this month, Sam and racing partner Emma Kimilainen from Finland took ‘Team Brady’ (owned by the American Football NFL icon) to the top of the podium with their E1 Jeddah GP victory in the waters of Red Sea, in the opening round of new electric series which features eight team-owned sports and celebrities taking part.
On Saturday, February 3, in front of thousands of fans, after two days of tense competition, ‘Team Brady’ pilots Sam and Emma, clinched the first round of the UIM E1 World Championship after staging an impressive comeback to beat day-one leaders Team Miami, owned by singer-songwriter Marc Anthony. The winning margin was almost 20 seconds with ‘Team Brady’ clocking in a time of 6.58.51.
Welshman Sam was introduced to powerboat racing in 2013 by his sister Daisy Coleman, and has gone on to become a house-hold name in the P1 SuperStock class where he has won four World Championships.
The world’s first all-electric raceboat championship saw teams battle it out under the Jeddah sunshine in high-octane racing, with speeds in excess of 50 knots (92kph / 57 mph).
The E1’s first Super Final featured eight team-owned sports and entertainment celebrities taking part in the waters of the Red Sea, and as well as the team of entrepreneur Brady (shareholder in multiple sports teams, among them - ‘Team Rafa’ (of tennis star Rafa Nadal), ‘Team Drogba’ (former footballer Didier Drogba), and ‘Blue Rising’, owned by Indian cricket star Virat Kohli.
Sam’s racing partner Emma said: “We’ve already had a message through from Tom and he’s super happy with the win. Both Sam and I are so incredibly proud to represent Tom and we’re pleased we were able to make history at E1’s inaugural race.”
Season one will continue in some of the most breathtaking coastal cities across the world, with the next stop Venice on May 11 and 12 and the series culminating in a race to Hong Kong on November 9 and 10.
