Sponsorship Presentations
Engineering director Andrew Brown from Milford Haven Port Authority and Mair Lewis from RWE npower visited the club this week to see the new RIB that their support had helped to purchase. The boat will be used extensively in both sail training and race patrol duties. This allows the club to maintain its Royal Yachting Association status as a training centre. Both of the sponsors were impressed with the facilities the club now offered and wished us every success in the future.
Club Racing
Sunday was a scorcher. Our members are an active bunch. Rather than lying on the beach they headed for the club house in the hope that a pleasant breeze would waft them round the cans in the Bay. We had a turn out of 17 dinghies for the first race, the wind favouring us. Three laps were satisfactorily completed. Capsizes were few and gentle affairs. Probably an excuse to cool off or practice while conditions allowed time to consider what needed to be done. Keith Jones was first past the post followed by the Solos of Paul Griffiths and Paul Johnson.
In the second race, the numbers swelled to 20 boats. A contrary breeze got the fleet going, but then decided to dump them as far from land as possible. The beat proved to be a drawn out affair , the race officer perplexed over the timing of shortening the course. Those sent around for a second lap were not best pleased. Averaging was definitely not in their favour! However, light winds are a great leveller. Who would have bet that an Opitimist would beat the Phantom Laser 2000 Fireball and all comers bar David Pleister in his Laser. Well done Ben Roberts for keeping to the task.
CYRCS
(Club Youth Race Circuit )
Sadly, last Saturday's CYRCS event was cancelled due to strong easterly winds. This did allow us to test the cancellation procedure via our website. A total success for all visiting boats however the local boats turned up as usual!
Coppet Week is
upon us (June 1-8)
The sailing club's main event of the season, Coppet Week starts today (Friday). Entries look good, but we can always accept more boats for the week or just individual days.
The boats are all now prepared and the refurbished club house is ready for the challenge. A full race and social programme is planned, with food and entertainment available in the clubhouse throughout the week and a warm West Wales welcome is awaiting all competitors and their families from across the country. The sailing captain Graham Wellman has published the duty rota for the volunteers over this week, so a big thank you, as usual to all helpers for putting this event on.
